Via Scoble, I read this post by Damien Katz about re-writing the Formula Engine in Lotus Notes. A fascinating story, but the part that made me smile was this:

    UI stuff is hard, but not many people actually appreciate how difficult it is to do correctly. Everyone thinks they're an expert, but very few have actually spent any time thinking seriously about it, reading any article or books on the subject, watching users behind one way mirrors during usability tests and seeing how easily users get confused and distracted. So one day I'd had enough, I couldn't stand it anymore, I was tired of battling all day with people who thought their 'little' tweak would have no repercussions whatsoever. Being a UI guy isn't just producing UIs, it also requires negotiating with lots of people, at least at Iris it did, which was the part I liked the least about the work."

arf

If 'one' can't respect interests or viewpoints of others, 'one' can't copy them, this means 'one' doesn't have a realistic view, 'one' can't be bothered to be interested, this is making his/her opinion useless, it's not based on anything.

The w.bloggar is an application that targets to be an interface between the user and his blog(s), in other words, is a Post and Template editor, with serveral features and resources that the browser based blog editors can not offer.

Because it's a software that runs over Windows GUI it allows the user to edit his posts without being connected to the Internet, saving locally one or more texts to be posted in the future. It can be minimized to the Tray bar as an icon and everytime the user wants to publish a new text, he just need a click and has the editor ready to work, finished the text, another click (if connected) and the post will be published.

Another great advantage of w.bloggar is that it is compatible with most of weblog systems available, allowing an advanced user to have one only interface to several accounts hosted on several different sites, under different publishing systems.

To comunicate with the weblog w.bloggar needs that the blog system has implemented an API, the acronym to Application Programming Interface. Currently w.bloggar is compatible with Blogger API, metaWeblog API, MovableType API and b2 API all based on XML-RPC definition.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Screensaver tackles spam websites

BBC NEWS | Technology | Screensaver tackles spam websites: "Net users are getting the chance to fight back against spam websites

Every time you add something to a webpage you potentially make that page a little less clear. Go through your website and list all the parts that you think are really cool; the parts your friends are really impressed with. Remove them.

One important thing to know is that the functionality of Web Sites will change very drastically. We will see a huge shift from sites displaying 'static content' to data driven sites delivering 'dynamic content'.

We will also see a lot of new browsers, like the browsers found in mobile devices, and we will see a lot more use of XML to communicate data between servers, and between servers and browsers.

We think a Web developer should focus on:

    * The HTML 4.01 Standard
    * The use of CSS (style sheets)
    * The new XHTML
    * XML and XSLT
    * Client side scripting
    * Server side scripting
    * Managing data with SQL"

mouse over madness
>colored links that underline if you mouse over them, this has no use but it looks cool and were used to it.

clear picture of "whut to do??"
You should always try to offer a clear picture of what you want your visitor to do on a page. or they wont.

This means you should limit the targets were you can. A yes / no kind of sub page is just the best.

This results in the page explainging about just a few options to continue reading after your done here.

names to links
Names on a page can be turned into links to make it more dynamic,

put the 2 together and you have a
chaotical number of links that all point to just a few pages.

Even the designer cant find things.

I was trying to find a sensible way to put the 3 together and it should work on this page by the time you read this.

Mouse over the colored text and see the effect! Doesn't that instantly explain they point to the same page??? I guess it can also affect the menu of a site in difrent ways.
I need to give examples to explain this, don't be confused by the examples having a subject. This idea is in no way limited to any topic,
don't you dare to be distracted or bored by the subject of the example.

open - closed source software.

government - private sector.

get diploma - don't get diploma.

Again, this is an example of 3 way's to do things and having to pick one way or the other. You cant have both. Actually you can but the 50% / 50% ratio is often disastrous. Think of a Linux-windows network being less dependent but more confused.

Building things you don't want? Yep, if you do m in a 99% / 1% ratio the 1% has almost no affect on the result. But it will give a picture of how things would look the other way around 1% / 99%. Go for: "not getting the diploma" and put 1% effort in it.

Lets say your Wiring open source software,have a look how you can make a closed source module. Don't make it! have a look and put 1% effort in it.

Or your writing closed source, have a look how you can make a open source module. Don't make it! have a look and put 1% effort in it.

The only interesting thing in privatizing the government is the RND. 1% is enough to get feeds. A business may do a little non profit project, it could make a name for itself and profit. Again 1% is more as enough.

I hope I made 1% of sense. :)

Why I work for free? I work for free because working for free opens exclusive opportunity's. Opportunity's from free work are unlimited. If you work for free you find out. People who work for free are not as self centered as those who always work for a fee. Maybe one day you will work for free just like me. Until that day enjoy me being this way.

Look how much you learned in so few words. And so incredibly well written.

I recently found out you can research anything you want on the website Google.

You could type "work for free" and learn something about it. (no link here).

if you ignore the data - the numbers, indicator lights, customer complaints, project glitches, recurring outages, or whatever - you could misinterpret or remain oblivious to even the most obvious signs of trouble and suffer uncomfortable or expensive consequences.
